CASE STUDY: Super Clamp
This technique has been developed with the specific aim of repairing burst and leaking mains (3", 4" and 6") under pressure on cast iron and ductile iron pipes where pinholes and circumferential failures are most common.
Since the aim is to carry out the repair from the surface via a small "key hole" excavation the accurate location of the leak position is crucial.
Once these criteria have been met, the hinged repair clamp is attached to a two part installation tool that places the repair clamp in the correct position on the pipe and then closes the clamp around the pipe, locating the fixing bolts and allowing the repair clamp to be fully tightened from the surface.
When this has been completed the installation tool splits into two halves and can be removed from each side of the clamp and out of the excavation.
This technique has the following advantages:-
- Extends opportunity for successful live repair - safely
- Reduces risk of customer supply interruptions
- Potential for significantly smaller excavation size
- Better working environment – from surface
